Russell Findlay has been elected as the new leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party in a ballot of party members.

The West Scotland MSP secured 2,565 first preference votes in the leadership election, ahead of fellow candidates Murdo Fraser on 1,187 votes, and Meghan Gallacher on 403 votes – and was therefore elected at the first round of voting.

Russell Findlay said he would use his leadership to bring common sense back to Scottish politics.

He pledged, “Under my leadership the Scottish Conservatives are going to change. We will work hard to earn your trust by doing things differently.

“We know you don’t expect miracles from politicians, you just want some common sense, for a change.

“We are determined to deliver it.”
